Do a Lot of Work

Last night, I went to see Junot Diaz read from This Is How You Lose Her. And this morning, Nicole from A Life Less Bullshit – who’s site I adore – posted this animated video of a quote by Ira Glass about the creative process, like a lovely little reminder sent from the universe.

One of my favorite takeaways when seeing authors in person is the way in which they relate to their own work, and the form their writing process takes. Paraphrasing Junot Diaz, who is unjustly humble about his work, even if you’re not great at what you do, if you stick around long enough, you can do something.

Of course, he is great at what he does, but there’s this message in the air that if you just keep pushing, and pushing, and pushing knowing that you might not have any encouragement from self or others, you can still do something good.

So, be willing to “keep throwing stuff away” and, as Joyce Carol Oates says, write your heart out.
