It’s been a long time since I’ve traveled anywhere other than home. (Cue the “To the window, to the walls” memes.) During that brief moment in the Northeast United States when it seemed as though there may be a light at the end of the COVID tunnel, we decided to book an Airbnb somewhere within driving distance. Cue Beacon, NY.
When I noticed that there was a Doctor Who-themed restaurant in Beacon, that made my decision for me. Actually, eating was the primary activity of this trip. Ziatun was my favorite, a Palestinian restaurant with plenty of vegetarian options and appetizers that I would happily drive an hour for any day. There was also Peaceful Provisions, a popular vegan donut shop that we happened to stumble upon, but may be my favorite donuts ever. Kitchen & Coffee was also delicious – I went back twice for the cheddar biscuits.
After filling our stomachs, the main “event” was visiting Storm King Art Center. Storm King is massive. While I loved all the different artworks and sculptures, it was also just really pleasant to be outside in such a spacious and natural setting. I had a moment when nearly no one else was around and the whole place just felt so peaceful. There was almost zero noise pollution, and I’d actually forgotten how pleasant that could be. It’s been a long time since I lived far enough from a city to hear silence.
Aside from food and art, it was just a super relaxing weekend. I napped a lot to catch up on some much-needed sleep. We watched Luca, which, can confirm, was pretty adorable. And generally disconnected from the day-to-day, which was just perfect.
