    I’ve been having a hard time writing here. Sometimes what’s most important is just writing. Something. So it doesn’t feel like the last “Published” date is getting smaller and smaller in your rearview mirror. Lots of things are different right now, so why wouldn’t this be?

    IX: The Hermit

    On Monday, the City of Philadelphia issued a Stay at Home order to help combat COVID-19 cases in the city. It’s been a bit of a surreal adjustment, as most people will probably say right now, but we’ve been lucky. Within our home, not much has changed in our day-to-day lives, aside from that overarching feeling that many of us seem to be afflicted with right now: that mixture of sadness, guilt, gratitude, uncertainty, and fear.

    Mother Tongue

    Every now and then, I’ll run into some colleagues who speak Italian and who, in their inclusive nature, always treat me as another Italian. That red passport and a last name ending in a vowel is enough to be considered part of the group, even if I’m not really Italian. These days, when I start to respond, I listen to the words coming out of my mouth and realize I’m not speaking Italian at all. I’m speaking Portuguese. Which is not the same, not by a long shot.

    These past few weeks have been pretty intense. After my trip to Lisbon, I dove right into some online classes I’m taking and a new training program. I actually had to set a reminder for myself to move my car because I haven’t driven anywhere (a.k.a. left the house) in a few weeks.
