Meditation can be a refuge, but it is not a practice in which real life is ever excluded. The strength of mindfulness is that it enables us to hold difficult thoughts and feelings in a different way—with awareness, balance, and love.
In the mornings, I meditate, usually with an affirmation. For the past few weeks, I’ve been feeling a little bit off, a little bit down. As a result, the following came to mind as I decided what affirmation best suited me in this moment:
Because I create my own reality, I choose to focus on the positive.

When I was in elementary school, I remember one particularly cruel recess period when almost all of the girls in my class decided to form a not-so-secret club, but they wouldn’t let me join. It was pure, adolescent meanness for the sake of soothing the aching uncertainty of puberty. Nevertheless, I remember sobbing next to the sink in our classroom and one of my classmates, who had barely spoken to me prior, feeding me paper towels to wipe the tears off my face. Continue reading
