    Mother Tongue

Every now and then, I’ll run into some colleagues who speak Italian and who, in their inclusive nature, always treat me as another Italian. That red passport and a last name ending in a vowel is enough to be considered part of the group, even if I’m not really Italian. These days, when I start to respond, I listen to the words coming out of my mouth and realize I’m not speaking Italian at all. I’m speaking Portuguese. Which is not the same, not by a long shot.

    Sabbatical: Week 1

Yesterday, it occurred to me that part of the reason why I’m always so tired is because I try to maintain a lot of hobbies outside of work. Most people, I think, would tell themselves, “Hey, there’s only 24 hours in a day. You’re not going to get to do everything you want.” Whereas my response tends towards waking up before dawn and trying to cram as much as possible into each hour, which, of course, is extremely sustainable.

    The Spaces We Choose

Knowledge of places is closely linked to knowledge of the self, to grasping one’s position in the larger scheme of things, including one’s own community, and to securing a confident sense of who one is as a person. Keith Basso, Wisdom Sits in Places I know, I always reference that quote. But I love it, and the idea that the places we inhabit are more than just structures. From the way we choose to decorate to the way we choose to occupy a space, it becomes imbued with meaning. Meanings that vary from person to person.
